Textile gonfaloni, film and photographies, 2019
Facsimile takes its point of departure in the perific multicultural area Corvetto, Milano, a transition between the rural, the peripheric and the transnational global. When entering the area of Corvetto, on a small cardboard sales stand, you might find copies of passports and identity cards stamped with capital orange text; FACSIMILE. This quality that both points toward repitition and rupture is the scope of this exhibition. It is a suggestion for an archive of the area’s various ecological, cultural and social expressions. Assemblages and transistions, in present and past, that point towards a multiplicity of existence and place. Textile gonfalonis, photographies and objects are drawing from objects in diverse crocery stores, shop signs, urban everyday practices and traditional festivities. They show common elements of playfulness and mixing as an aesthetic and social strategy of establishing new types of belonging and territory: A fake national identity card, chilean spicy sardines celebrating the little Mermaid, harvesting of invasive species; the river shrimp of Louisiana. Through a site-specific journey the project puts attention to belonging and landscape, asking how cultures are formed together in a world that is always changing. The exhibition was made during a residency at Viafarini in collaboration with Cascina Casotello, a former farmstead turned into an international cultural center, created by a community of senegalese.
