A Garden - Lines, Threads and Traces

A speculative mapping of garden communities. Workshops, art/poetry/essay publication and more.
Collaboration with  poet and writer Helene Johanne Christensen

The world is not a blank slate. Every place is already filled with lines, threads, and traces of life that continuously shape and reshape the site. When creating a garden, one inevitably disrupts the existing lines of the place and creates new ones. The design of the garden takes place through a collaboration between humans, the non-human inhabitants of the garden, and passing forces such as wind, rain, and sun. Each and every one draws lines in the garden and is a co-creator. In this project we, inspired by Tim Ingold’s book Lines, Jane Bennet’s concept of onto-sympaties and ideas of eros and kinship, depart from the hypothesis that by mapping the lines of the garden—the diversity of threads and traces—we can uncover the intricate community that the garden embodies.  Doing this we embedded ourselves in the daily life and work in the Garden of Rønnebæksholm Art Center, and developed a series of speculative mapping techniques, including: Insect stalking, vertical dreaming, plant and gardener croquis, wild-life photography, the method of eroticism and ontosympathy, letter-writing to the inhabitants and garden poetry. Some of these techniques where delevop into workshops with different groups such as; visitors, school students, volunteers and art professionals of the museum.
